What We Do
The Global Phosphorus Institute works to ensure that phosphorus is managed responsibly and sustainably in support of food security, environmental health, and inclusive development. We operate at the interface of science, policy, and practice—transforming knowledge into action and convening stakeholders to shape informed decisions at global, regional, and national levels.
Knowledge Generation
GPI serves as a global hub for phosphorus knowledge. We consolidate, analyze, and curate scientific evidence to strengthen understanding of phosphorus systems across the entire value chain, including agricultural and non-agricultural applications. Through research synthesis, analytical studies, and strategic assessments, we advance integrated perspectives on phosphorus use, stewardship, and innovation. Our work provides stakeholders with robust, evidence-based insights that support informed dialogue and strategic decision-making.
Policy Engagement
We support policymakers and institutions by translating science into actionable guidance. GPI provides advisory support to help integrate phosphorus considerations into agricultural, environmental, and resource policies. We also convene and contribute to global and regional dialogues, creating spaces where science, policy, and practice can meet. These engagements strengthen alignment across sectors and ensure that phosphorus-related decisions are informed, coherent, and context-specific.
Platforms & Coordination
GPI plays a coordinating role in bringing actors together around shared phosphorus agendas. We host and support collaborative platforms such as the African Platform for Phosphorus for Food Security (APPFS), which fosters cooperation across countries, institutions, and value chains. Through stakeholder convenings, high-level forums, and expert consultations, we encourage collective action, knowledge exchange, and the emergence of shared priorities at regional and international scales.
Capacity Building
Building long-term impact requires people as much as policies. GPI invests in capacity building through fellowships and learning initiatives that strengthen expertise on phosphorus issues, particularly in the Global South. By supporting emerging leaders, researchers, and practitioners, we help grow a global community capable of advancing sustainable phosphorus stewardship well into the future.
