African Platform for Phosphorus
The African Platform for Phosphorus is a pan-African
initiative launched in September 2025 in Dakar, on the
sidelines of the Africa Food System Forum. It aims to
address one of the continent’s most urgent yet
under-recognized challenges
Why this platform?
Although Africa holds more than 80% of the world’s phosphate
rock reserves, many African soils suffer from severe phosphorus
deficiency. This essential nutrient is critical for plant growth,
yet its limited availability significantly constrains agricultural
productivity and food security across the continent
Objectives of the platform
The platform aims to:
- Map phosphorus flows, uses, and needs across African regions and agro-ecological zones
- Strengthen policy coherence and collaboration among African countries, RECs, and global partners
- Promote efficient, equitable, and sustainable use of phosphorus resources
- Mobilize partnerships to support research, innovation, investment, and capacity building
